Colloidal Silver for Dogs and Cats – A natural alternative to antibiotics.

An absolute must have for every pet owners First Aid kit is something called Colloidal Silver.

A powerful, natural antibiotic, it is said to be effective against 650 microorganisms and is great for treating and healing burns, wounds, hotspots, ear infections and even cleaning your pet’s teeth.

But is Colloidal Silver a fad? Is it dangerous? Read on here.

Colloidal Silver was used extensively for its antibiotic and anti-microbial properties long before the advent of modern-day antibiotics and continues to be used in hospitals today as a wound dressing. We recommend it forms part of every pet owners first aid kit because we know it is helpful against canine acne, hotspots, conjunctivitis, cough, tonsillitis, ear and yeast infections and fighting tooth decay. Whilst it may not cure cancer, we think it is definitely worth a try to treat a number of common pet ailments.

What is it?

Colloidal Silver is a natural and powerful broad-spectrum antibiotic agent, it also has excellent antiseptic, antifungal and disinfectant properties. It is made from 9.9% fine silver particles suspended in purified water.

Concentration 10ppm

How does it work?

Colloidal Silver works to destroy bacterial, fungal and viral infections in cats and dogs just as well as it does in human beings. Furthermore, because colloidal silver is odourless, almost tasteless and non-toxic, experts say you can use it for both dogs and cats internally and externally.

Benefits:

  • Colloidal Silver will not sting when applied topically to wounds, abrasions etc. as it kills topical germs without harming the surrounding tissue.
  • It is non-toxic to dogs and cats unless it is ingested in substantial quantities over a long period of time – in which case it could cause liver and/or kidney problems.
  • Colloidal Silver does not have any known interactions with drugs or herbs
  • It is non allergenic; it does not react chemically on or within the body and therefore cannot trigger an allergic reaction.

Uses:

Abrasions, cuts and wounds – Disinfect and speed healing

Apply Colloidal Silver directly to the wound and if you are applying a dressing (wrap or bandage) apply a little colloidal silver to the dressing as well. As colloidal silver will not react with other medications, it can be used with another medication.

Canine Acne – Treating and healing

Use a small piece of cotton ball and massage a small amount of colloidal silver in to the problem areas 2-3 times a day.

Ear Infections – Treating, reducing inflammation and healing

Using a dropper, place 3-5 drops of colloidal silver into the ear canal, 2-3 times a day. Gently rub/massage the ear in a circular motion then remove your hand and let your dog or cat shake its head. You can use a cotton ball to gently wipe away any excess liquid off the inside of the ear flap. Swab the inner-ear flap with colloidal silver once or twice a day. Do not put cotton buds or swabs into the ear canal – you can very easily damage the ear drum!

Do not use any of these treatments if your pets ear drums are perforated or punctured.

Hot spots, skin rashes or insect bites – Treating and healing

Spray or use a cotton ball to apply (dab) colloidal silver directly on to the affected area – rub gently. Repeat several times daily.

Periodontal issues, infected teeth, bleeding gums – Treating and healing

Spray colloidal silver onto a toothbrush and brush daily without the use of water.

Tummy upsets, coughs or tonsillitis

Pour 1.5tsp in to your pets water bowl 2-3 times a day for 10 days, depending on the size of your pet.

Detox

Colloidal silver can also be added to your pets drinking water to detoxify the body. For advice regarding dosage and length of treatment and whether this is suitable for your pet please consult an Animal Naturopath or Holistic Vet. It is important that your dog or cat takes additional fluids during any detox. You can add homemade unsalted stock to your dog’s meal or provide a small bowl filled with stock next to your dog’s water bowl to encourage additional intake of fluids. Keeping fluid levels up will help your dog’s system effectively flush out toxins.
