The Science

Silybum marianum (Milk thistle) an native of India and Pakistan, is one of the most studied of herbs for the liver, demonstrating significant hepatoprotective factors.

In animal studies, milk thistle protects liver cells against a variety of hepatoxins, including drugs (such as acetaminophen and amitriptyline), toxins, viruses and radiation. It scavenges free radicals, blocks toxin entry into cells, inhibits inflammation and stimulates liver regeneration :  Woods-LaVoie, Patricia, Better Nutrition, Sep2000,

Matricaria chamomilla (Chamomile) Chamomile tea, brewed from dried flower heads, has been used traditionally for medicinal purposes for centuries. The main constituents of the flowers include several phenolic compounds, primarily the flavonoids and their glucosides. The principal components of the essential oil extracted from the flowers are the terpenoids alpha-bisabolol and its oxides and azulenes, including chamazulene. Chamomile has moderate antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.

Animal model studies indicate potent anti-inflammatory action, some antimutagenic and cholesterol-lowering activities, as well as antispasmotic and anxiolytic effects. McKay DL, Blumberg JB (PUBMED) July 2006.

Animal Botanical’s Master Herbalist has combined these significant herbs with other carminative and bitter herbs such as Fennel and Blue Flag as a complete herbal formulation that may aid digestion and support liver and thyroid function, thereby improving metabolic process.

My now nearly 16yr old Border Collie X Beagle, Gemma, was diagnosed with Insulinoma just over a year ago! She is too old for surgery and so we opted for Palliative Care. Assuming that she probably had liver metastases as well as Pancreatic tumour, because her poops were very yellow and sloppy, I discussed with my vet, trying her on this liver tonic to see if it could help with filtering through the good cells still working! Well, here we are a year since diagnosis and although she is gradually weakening, (the constant Prednisolone doesn't help with her muscle tone), her poops are much better formed and less yellowed. My vet calls her, her miracle girl - her prognosis was for only a few months!!! I feel that this tonic has certainly helped keep her as well as possible.

Robin thank you for taking the time for this review. I lost my 10yr old Emma to Insulinoma near 2 years ago. It's a horrible condition. Your Gemma is beautiful :)

Happy result for Tigger
Following a routine health check for our 13 year old Staffy Tigger our vet suggested a blood test as he was concerned over one of his urine levels. The results of blood test showed liver enzymes up a little but more concerning were his ALT levels at 340 , normal being 20 - 125.
Hannah at Aussie Pooch suggested using Animal Botanical liver detox. I’m happy to report that following our vet visit this week Tiggers urine readings are all normal.
Thank you for saving Tigger from more blood tests & possible long term medication as the vet suggested we may have been looking at sclerosis of the liver.
