How it works: The Ant Proof Plate uses an all-natural insect repellent made from fossilised water plants, known as diatoms. The diatoms are mined and ground into a powder that looks and feels like talcum powder.
Diatoms are harmless to mammals - we can eat it, and in fact we do, since it's used in many grain-based foods to keep bugs from eating the grain during storage.
To insects, slugs and snails, diatoms act as a lethal dust with microscopic, razor-sharp edges. These particles stick to an insect and get embedded between its exoskeleton joints - as the insect moves, it's physically cut. Insects won't cross diatoms once they encounter them. There's no build-up of tolerance like with poison, because the method of repelling is physical, not chemical.
